Your Guide to Success! 🚀

🚀 Setting Up Your Solo Practice

Checklist for requirements for your solo practice

We're excited to help you establish your successful solo practice.

Before you can start your new fractional mandate with Goodlawyer, you must have, at a minimum:

  • Insurance provided by LawPro, ALIA, or equivalent insurance provider.
  • At your sole discretion, you may choose to purchase additional insurance as appropriate for your practice or clients (e.g. cryptocurrency clients).

Within the first month (prior to the first invoice) of your new fractional mandate with Goodlawyer, you must also have:

  • Prior to incorporating a professional corporation, you may require a permit from your law society.
  • GST/HST/PST is collected from the client based on their location
  • To setup your lawyer account on the Goodlawyer fractional app, you must enter banking information for deposit of your legal fees
  • If you are in process of setting up your bank account, you may use any available bank account and update when your practice bank account is ready
  • Goodlawyer does not operate a trust account because it is not a law firm
  • Goodlawyer fractional mandates are fixed fee (no retainers) and for in-house work that does not involve client funds moving through a lawyer’s practice bank account
  • At their sole discretion, lawyers may choose to apply for a trust exemption from their law society
  • Goodlawyer is not a law firm so you must have your own conflict check system and advise Goodlawyer as early as possible in the sales process if you are conflicted out of a potential opportunity

Other optional practice setup items:

  • Clients follow Goodlawyer best practices to onboard their new fractional lawyer to the client’s internal suite of tools
  • Some fractional clients provide their Goodlawyer with a company laptop to access to the client’s internal suite of tools

These optional setup items are not required for your new fractional mandate. Goodlawyer is here to support you in building your most desirable way to practice -  it’s entirely up to you what works best for how, where, and when you want to practice!
