PRE-READING (10 minutes)

The Sales Process

From matching, to outreach, engagement agreement, and closing the deal.

Once you're in the network, you don't have to chase opportunities — we bring them to you. Here's what happens behind the scenes, from the moment a client need arises to the day you start a mandate, so you know where you fit in and what to expect along the way.

Talent Slate

Our team is out meeting companies, understanding their legal needs, and defining each role — the scope, the level of experience, and the kind of lawyer who'd be the right fit. By the time an opportunity reaches you, the business case and the shape of the mandate are largely worked out.

When an opportunity strongly aligns with your background, we contact you directly with a summary of the role and the client. We only put you on a talent slate when the match is genuinely strong on technical skill, industry, seniority, goals, availability, and working style. Before we ever put you in front of a client, we confirm you're interested, available, and aligned with the estimated pricing. You're never presented to a client without your opt-in.

💡

We only match lawyers to live, active opportunities with start dates in the next 8 weeks. It is important that lawyers are responsive as opportunities move quickly.

Client Proposal

If you're in, we write up why you're a strong fit for this specific mandate tying your experience directly to what the client needs. Then we present a small, curated proposal (usually 2-5 lawyers) to the client for interview selection

You won't be selected for every proposal, and that's normal — it's rarely about you, and more about the particular mix a client is weighing. If you don't hear back on a role, it usually means the client went a different direction; you can always reach out to the Account Executive for an update.

💡

By this stage, it’s critical that you understand the requirements of running a solo practice to make an informed decision and not stall the deal out near the finish line.

Interviewing

If the client wants to meet you, we prep you, and facilitate the interview. Your Account Executive will have a prep call where we recap the client’s business case, explain why you were selected, and walk you through how the interview will run.

In addition to a bespoke prep call, we’ve put together a high-level guide with essential tips for having your best possible interview.

💡

It’s important to know that we're in the interview with you: we open the conversation, handle any questions about Goodlawyer or the logistics, and help keep things on track.

Engagement Agreement

When both sides want to move forward, we draft the engagement agreement and manage the logistics and negotiation. The relationship runs on a three-way agreement: you provide the legal services to the client, Goodlawyer provides the services around them (sales, contracting, billing, collections, and account management) to both of you, and the agreement ties all three parties together. You're the lawyer in the relationship; you're not the client's employee, and you're not ours either.

Each mandate then lives in the Goodlawyer app as its own Scope of Work with its own pricing, and the app's terms of service cover the working relationship between you and Goodlawyer. As you take on more mandates, each is added the same way, so the structure stays clean however your practice grows.

Ongoing Account Management

After the agreement is signed, we hand you off to a dedicated account manager who supports the mandate from there. Their role is keeping an eye on how it's going, helping with scope adjustments, overages and underages, managing vacations, and keeping the client relationship healthy.

💡

Most mandates run in 3-month renewal cycles, starting with a Pilot period where we validate the committed monthly volume and make any required adjustments to mandate terms.

Then The Cycle Repeats

This process isn't one-and-done. Most lawyers run through this cycle a few times before the right mandate lands, and keep going through it as their practice grows. You won't be picked for every slate and you won’t win every interview — that's normal, rarely about you, and the next opportunity might be an even better fit.

Your Part

You don't need to chase opportunities but two things make a real difference.

  1. Stay clear on what you want, keep your Work Preferences current, and keep your resume and LinkedIn sharp and specific.
  1. Be prepared and be responsive when we bring you an opportunity. Get familiar with how we operate and what will be required of you. The lawyers who reply quickly and prepare thoroughly are consistently the ones who win mandates.
💡

It typically takes 3-6 months for lawyers in the network to get their first opportunity (not guaranteed). Patience is key.

Remember, matching is a highly tailored and specific process. Be specific about your experience, what you want, and respond to our team quickly. Good luck!
